Seasonal Workshops
Everyday, UW holds dynamic, safe and relevant (and free!) creative writing workshops for teens, across the five boroughs of New York City. These workshops often serve as initial entry points and incubators for youth participation in the organization’s other key programs.
NYC Youth Poet Laureate
UW partners with the Office of the Mayor of NYC and NYC Votes to host an annual competition to identify a youth ambassador for poetry, community service youth political engagement. UW’s YPL program is currently being replicated in over 30 cities nationwide.
NYC Youth Poetry Slam
UW’s annual poetry slam programs are among the most rigorous and competitive in the country – each year electing 6 youth to represent NYC at Brave New Voices, the national youth poetry slam competition. Since Brave New Voices’ inception in 1998, UW has won the competition 4 times, and ranked among the top 5 teams in the nation for each of the 11 years.
Creatively College Bound
UW’s signature college preparation workshop series boasts an impressive 85% acceptance rate for youth who commit to the series. CCB is an immersive incubator workshop series that focuses on infusing powerful creative writing into the application process, and covers every step of the application timeline, including a walk through of applications themselves, vigorous scholarship searches, letter of recommendation, and more.
