Urban Word NYC and the NYC Department of Education’s Middle School Quality Initiative (MSQI) have partnered to use the popularity of spoken word poetry and hip hop to cultivate and celebrate the powerful voices of your students. Words & Verbs is a complete poetry and performance curriculum aimed at inspiring student writing, performance, and examining the power of language and art. Words & Verbs also includes teacher training, teaching artist visits, and the opportunity to participate in regional and citywide poetry slams
Classroom teachers participate in a 3-hour hands-on training on implementing the Words & Verbs curriculum.
Classroom teachers receive the Word & Verbs curriculum and can choose to implement as few as 8 to more than 20 sessions to help students develop their literacy analysis, poetry and performance.
The Words & Verbs curriculum covers all aspects of this program, from writing and performance, to how to run a poetry slam.
The curriculum includes engaging sessions featuring Sojourner Truth, Walt Whitman, Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, contemporary hip hop artists, award-winning youth poets, and more.
Professional poets from Urban Word work with teachers and students to build their excitement and skills around spoken word poetry, and the teaching artists prepare students to SLAM!
Once the students are prepared, classroom teachers facilitate the POETRY SLAM in either their classroom or school performance space.
The top poets from each school perform at NYC regional slams in late spring and compete to represent their school in the citywide final slam at an esteemed NYC venue in June.
