The NYC Youth Poet Laureate Program provides young voices the opportunity to promote civic engagement, literacy, and community building. The Winner of the NYC Youth Poet Laureate Program receives a book deal and a platform to advocate for social and political issues they are passionate about.

MEET THE 2016 NYC YOUTH

POET LAUREATE

Nkosi Nkululeko

We are pleased to announce that Nkosi Nkululeko has been selected as New York City’s Youth Poet Laureate (YPL). Nkosi, a Callaloo Fellow and The Watering Hole Fellow, has received nominations for the American Voices Award, Independent Best American Poetry and Pushcart Prize.

Nkosi was a member of the 2014 Urban Word NYC Slam Team and 2015 Urbana-NYC Slam Team. His work is currently published or forthcoming in decomP, No Token, The New Sound, Rose Red Review, Hobart and elsewhere. He resides in Harlem, New York, where he listens to Jazz, waving his Jazz hands.

As the Youth Poet Laureate, Nkosi will travel the five boroughs to speak to his peers about voting and civic engagement. As NYC Youth Poet Laureate, Nkosi will receive a book deal from Penmanship Books!

HOW DO I QUALIFY?
You must be between 14 –19 years old and a current resident of New York City.

HOW DO I APPLY?
Submit one (1) participation form which is due on Nov. 1st, 2016.

GUIDELINES:
Your complete entry must include:

1. A poetry portfolio. The portfolio should include a “one minute” poem that should speak about “what voting means to you?” and 5 poems (we recommend that one of these be a YouTube link).

Topics strongly suggested and encouraged are: “civic and community engagement, activism, and issues that really matter to you.”

2. A CV/Artist Resume. Your CV/Resume should include: school accomplishments (awards, club memberships, etc) community work (i.e. volunteer work, etc) and artistic and personal accomplishments (shows you’ve performed or produced, personal creative projects, etc.)

The NYC Youth Poet Laureate will win a book deal from Penmanship Books, conduct a reading tour and make special appearances throughout New York City for one (1) year.
