We are pleased to announce that Sharon Lin has been selected as New York City’s Youth Poet Laureate (YPL). She has performed her poetry at the Celeste Bartos Forum, St. Joseph’s University, and #WeThePeople TeenLIVE. She also won the Scholastic Art and Writing Gold Key Award, and has been published in KidSpirit, The Feminist Wire, and WHITETEETHMAG. She was named a White House Champion of Change and a Disney Friends for Change, and has been awarded the National Liberty Museum Young Heroes Award and the Presidential Gold Service Award. Her writing has been recognized by Yale University, the Harvard Leadership Review, the National Sejong Society, and YES! Magazine. She is currently a senior at Stuyvesant High School.
Sharon Lin was the winner of the Congressional App Challenge in NY-10 for her Android platform application iVOTE, which provides users with features that assist them in determining a voter platform. Implementing modules on the political views of candidates, backgrounds, and information on controversial topics of debate, iVOTE seeks to fight voter apathy by educating voters about important issues regarding current political candidates.
As the Youth Poet Laureate, Sharon will travel the five boroughs to speak to her peers about voting and civic engagement. As NYC Youth Poet Laureate, Sharon will receive a book deal from Penmanship Books!

While there will only be one NYC Youth Poet Laureate, all 15 finalists selected for this year’s competition will be awarded Urban Word NYC’s first-ever Federal Hall Fellowship! In partnership with the U.S. National Park Service and the Dialogue Arts Project, we’re excited to offer paid fellowships for each YPL finalist to participate in a 3-week incubator workshop series at the historic Federal Hall National Memorial in lower Manhattan — the site of George Washington’s inauguration as the first President of the United States in 1789. This October workshop series will be facilitated by a team of nationally acclaimed artists, actors, and musicians in the Urban Word NYC community, and will offer fellows the opportunity to write, work and dialogue together in the weeks leading up to the final competition.
